Breast Cancer Screening Recommendations

Following the American Cancer Society's and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure's guidelines for the early detection of breast cancer for most adults:
  • Annual mammograms beginning at age 40
  • Clinical breast exams every three years beginning at ages 20-30, and annually from age 40
  • Breast self-awareness - know what is normal for you and report any change promptly to your healthcare provider.

Women with a family history of breast cancer and those with other concerns about personal risk should consult a healthcare provider. Screening tests may be needed more often or started sooner than expected.

As part of a total approach to breast health, it is important that women become familiar with their own bodies, play an active role in their health, and develop a close partnership with healthcare providers.
